Why Organic is Better

Making healthy choices while at the grocery store can be challenging. Especially when you’re crunched for time and on a budget. There are so many products to choose from and they all do the same thing: feed you and your family. So why choose organic when there are alternative options out there?

The word “organic” refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products. Organic farming practices are designed to meet goals set by the USDA.  Everything from the crops generally grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, reducing pollution, providing safe healthy livestock habitats, enhancing soil and water quality. The list goes on.

Organic foods have higher amounts of antioxidants in them than conventional foods (npr). With the absence of pesticides and fertilizers, plants have to fight off more hungry bugs and disease. Which results in higher amounts of antioxidants.

Organic farming reduces pollutants in groundwater and creates richer soil that aids in plant growth. It also decreases pesticides that can end up in your drinking water.

If you can afford it, buy organic and local if possible. It’ll taste better, its better for the environment and you’ll reduce the amount of pesticides you put in your body. When shopping for organic foods, always look for the USDA Organic seal.
